Definition of artisanal mining (s 8):

  • Rudimentary mineral extraction and processing that is:
    • Continuous or seasonal
    • Conducted by individuals or groups
    • Based primarily on manual labour and tools
    • Conducted at single or multiple sites
    • Producing minerals for:
      • Traders
      • Local artists and craftsmen
      • Builders within the domestic economy

Artisanal mining operations:

  • Limited to 10 metres depth
  • Must operate under an artisanal mining licence
