Regulation of Work in Africa
This platform presents a structured mapping of the regulation of work across the 55 Member States of the African Union (AU).
It is based on the preliminary mapping of workers’ rights, labour market institutions, and informal economy regulation in AU Member States, and is intended to support comparative research, policy engagement, and continental collaboration.
The mapping consists of four interrelated components:
- High-level country mapping of labour rights and regulation across AU Member States
- Sector-specific regulation (including domestic work, street vending, waste reclaiming, home work, gig/platform work, farm work, artisanal mining, taxi and transport sectors, and cross-border informal trade)
- A stakeholder database of public institutions, social partners, and worker organisations
- An academic and research network hub concerned with the regulation of work in Africa
This platform is a work in progress. It seeks to facilitate collaboration, inform research, and support inclusive and effective decision-making processes in pursuit of labour justice and sustainable development.
